France’s nuclear utility is expected undertake a project to construct two 1600MW EPR reactors at Hinkley Point, England, by the end of year. EDF has already committed £1billion over the next year to prepare the groundwork for the decision.
In addition, EDF has decided to invest £100m in prolonging the lives of two of its present UK nuclear plants by five years. This will help to bridge a large supply gap as Britain’s older power stations are being phased out.
The Investment cost which is expected to be over £350m, or £25m per reactor – would be shared jointly by EDF and its UK partner Centrica.
